School Board

As an independent public school, Edgewater Primary School has a school board consisting of parent, staff and community members. The role of the board is essentially that of involvement in the governance of the school. This means taking part in the shaping and monitoring of the school's vision, objectives, priorities and general policy directions.

The board does not have a role in school management. This is the responsibility of the principal and involves educational leadership and the day-to-day administration, supervision and control of the school and its staff.

The board is formed with the fundamental purpose of enabling parents and members of the community to engage in activities that are in the best interests of students and will enhance the education provided by the school.

The role of the school board is outlined in the School Education Act 1999. In essence, the role of a school board is one of setting the long term future goals for the school and maintaining oversight (not management) of the school's operation. It is not about running the school - that is the job of the principal. It is about providing additional expertise to help the school achieve the outcomes for its students.

The current school board members are:

Simon Young

Parent Representative and Chair

I joined the school board during its inception in 2014 and became involved to be part of my daughter's school community and to help with the new Board development during it's transition of the school to an Independent Public School. My daughter has now moved onto high school and I have continued my involvement with the school, and thoroughly enjoy the opportunity to help towards improving the school experience for EPS students, and the growth of the board. I have also been President of the school's P&C committee and am an active member of the Breakers Swim Club committee.

My working background is in public service, with service in the Royal Air Force, Policing and Local Government. My skills and experience are in IT, team management, asset management, project management and engineering. I have used my experiences in project planning to help towards the creation of the school's strategic and annual plans.

It has been a privilege to be involved with such great people in our school community and helping towards to the growth of our school and the experiences of those who are part of our school’s family.

Julie Tombs

Principal

My passion has always been to make a difference in students’ lives whether through my many years as a classroom teacher, curriculum advisor or in school administration roles. As Principal of Edgewater Primary School and a member of our School Board I am fortunate to work with board members who share a similar desire to contribute positively to the education and well-being of our students. Our current school board members have diverse backgrounds and bring a rich array of expertise to school board decision making. I greatly appreciate this depth and breadth of experience and value the time and commitment that is given by each of them in setting and reviewing the strategic directions for our school.

Kylie McCullough

Parent Representative

I have been a member of the Edgewater school board since March 2015. I had two children at the school at that time (one is now in high school) and I wanted to be involved in shaping the future of EPS as an independent school.

I am a nurse and university lecturer and have been able to bring my professional expertise to the board; however, it is my perspective as a parent that has been most valuable.

Over the last few years the board has supported an increase in resources and staff training to enhance the social and emotional wellbeing of our children and I believe this is a positive step for our children’s academic and personal achievements.

Leah Beltran

Parent Representative

My eldest daughter started Edgewater Kindergarten in 2014 and at the start of 2016 I joined the P&C committee. In the second half of 2016, a position on the school board became available and I was excited at the prospect of increasing my role within the school. I am still an active member of the P&C and I am currently serving on the fundraising committee.

Within the school board, I saw an opportunity to evolve communication with all parts of the school community. I am currently the communication representative on the board, which has allowed me to get involved in transitioning the school to different methods of connecting with parents and others.

I’ve felt privileged to be a part of shaping the school and I’m looking forward to continuing my involvement with the school community.

Rebecca Wright

Parent Representative

I have two children at Edgewater PS, one in Year 1 and one in Kindy.  I joined the School Board in 2016, as my children’s education and wellbeing is very important to me, and I feel I can make a positive contribution.

I am also involved with the P&C, and the revitalisation of the Nature Play area.

Edgewater PS is a great school with dedicated staff and teachers and a great community and I am proud to be part of it.

Sue McInnes

Parent Representative

For over 25 years my family has had the pleasure to live in Edgewater and be part of the local community.  Now, with one daughter at Edgewater Primary School, I have the opportunity to volunteer as a parent representative to the School Board.

I am a CPA and have numerous years business experience which I hope will enable me to provide a valuable contribution assisting the Board and to make the school a better place for all.

John Ingham

Community Representative

I have been part of the Edgewater School board as the community representative for nearly two years now.

I value the opportunity to be part of a vibrant school community, and I see my role on the board as being a person from a background other than education that can give a different point of view to others on the committee .

In the past I have been part of the P and C  of various schools that my own children have attended including times as president and vice president.

I have always been involved with young people’s development in other roles that I have fulfilled including  coaching sporting teams and running youth groups.

I have worked as a Police Officer for over 35 years and my current role is a support role to different Police operations.

My previous role was in the education & training  of Police recruits at the Joondalup Police academy.

I certainly value the opportunity having some input into Edgewater primary school.

Sue Sugg

Staff Representative

I joined the Edgewater Primary School staff in 2011 after teaching for many years in the country across a variety of year levels. I am currently teaching Year 4 four days per week, and I am the Learning Support Coordinator one day per week. Edgewater’s School Vision of aspirational, confident and respectful learners allows for the complete development of all students, and I am proud to part of the School Board as we strive to enhance the opportunities for all students.

Gail Baily

Staff Representative

The role of the Edgewater Primary School Board is vital in achieving our vision for our school.  I have taught in the country and the city, teaching years 3 – 7 as well as specialist Music. In addition to my role as Year 4/5 classroom teacher, I spend one day a week as the Pastoral Care Coordinator. In this role I am passionate about addressing the social and emotional needs of our school community. With over 30 years teaching experience at Edgewater Primary and more than 20 years as a member of the School’s decision making groups, I am proud and excited to be working with the Board members as we continue to strive to provide quality education for every child in an ever changing world.
